The Freedom Programme From Users’ Perspectives
The Freedom Programme is a domestic abuse awareness programme written by Pat Craven. Since lockdown, Calan DVS has delivered five Freedom Programmes via Zoom across each of our delivery areas. In South Powys alone, our team delivered the Freedom Programme to 32 survivors of domestic abuse, with three of these completed on a 1:1 basis, Feedback was positive with an emphasis on decreasing isolation and peer support as well as gaining knowledge about the nature of abuse.
Some of the feedback we have received includes:
“So I don’t feel like I’m going through this alone.”
“Support from others’ stories and knowing the warning signs.”
“Mostly being able to talk about it to other people.”
Being able to deliver these sessions online is very convenient for a large rural area like South Powys where public transport is poor and it can be difficult to get to a central venue. This is something we we continue to offer in the future regardless of Covid restrictions.
Some comments on the online courses are listed below:
“Happy with online, made attendance much easier, not having to worry about fuel costs.”
“Useful, makes you comfortable being able to do it in your own home.”
“It helped me become more confident with technology and not feel so isolated.”
We will be running further Freedom programmes from w/c 16 November.
Our Neath Port Talbot teams have also delivered a number of Freedom programmes over the last 10 weeks. The feedback we have received from participants as follows:
“I think it’s been really helpful to me. I knew my past relationships were abusive but looking back I can now see they were abusive from the beginning. It was good using the Zoom account because even though we weren’t physically together, it definitely felt like we were. I also found it helpful hearing other points of view. I felt comfortable with Rebecca, I’ve never opened up like that before.”
“I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed that we had a small group. I’m form a different culture to the rest of the group and I found some topic difficult to speak about, but there was no pressure. On the whole I enjoyed it and Rebecca was a good host”
“So at the beginning of the freedom programme, I didn’t fully understand what I had been through. I always felt it was normal because that was how I was used to being treated by multiple partners. I’ve had to come to terms with things that have happened to me and now I know this was ok. I really feel empowered to stop this cycle and finally know that it isn’t my fault. Which I why I determined now to make sure there are consequences for my ex’s behaviour. I feel this is important and a way I can stand up for myself. I have clear understanding of how I should be treated and I will not accept anything less. So thank you for all your hard work over the last few weeks. You’ve helped me loads and I’ll always be grateful.”
