Julia Ward – Advocate Educator – Neath
I am Julia Ward the IRIS Senior Advocate Educator working for Calan DVS. I have worked in domestic abuse since 2009, when I started with Neath Women’s Aid as a volunteer. I have supported women survivors in refuge and community settings until I took on the role as IRIS Advocate Educator in May 2020.
Domestic abuse can be experienced by anyone regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or social status and as it is very rare to receive referrals from GP surgeries, I was interested in training clinicians in how to recognise patients who are affected by domestic abuse. I have therefore been presented with a wonderful opportunity to help ensure that clinicians have the necessary tools to recognise domestic abuse and they are able to offer these patients the help that they need from the IRIS Advocate Educator based at Calan DVS. When the clinician makes a referral to the team at IRIS we can help support and safeguard patients who are victims and survivors of domestic abuse and provide them with the support that they may never have been offered before.
